What actually moves the price
1. Material
The largest single lever. Vinyl is about half the aluminium baseline; copper is roughly four times it. Nothing else on the estimate moves the total as much.
2. Storey height
Labour, not material. Two storeys adds roughly a quarter to the install cost, three roughly half, because of staging and slower, safer ladder work.
3. Gutter size
A 6-inch profile costs roughly 25% more per foot than 5-inch — more coil, bigger outlets, larger downspouts. In high-rainfall regions it is the correct spec rather than an upsell.
4. Corners and outlets
Every inside and outside corner is a mitred joint made by hand on site. A complex roofline with eight corners takes materially longer than a simple rectangle of the same length.
5. Fascia condition
The one that appears mid-job. Rotten fascia has to be replaced before anything can be hung off it, and it is rarely visible until the old gutter comes down.
Warning signs in a quote
- A per-foot price quoted without asking your run length, storey count or corner count — it is a guess, and it will move once someone actually looks.
- No line item for downspouts. They are always separate, and a quote without them is not comparable to one with them.
- A quote that does not mention the existing gutter. Tear-off and disposal is real work and real landfill cost.
- Pressure to decide on the spot with a discount that expires today. Gutter work is rarely an emergency, and a legitimate contractor will hold a price for a week.
- No mention of fascia. Any experienced installer will tell you upfront that rot is possible and how it would be charged if found.
